The payout timeline
- Preliminary approval. The judge allows the settlement to be announced. Notices go out and the claim form opens.
- Claim deadline. You file before this date. Most settlements stay open for 2 to 6 months.
- Final approval hearing. The court decides whether the settlement is fair. It's usually set close to the claim deadline. Each settlement page in our open class action lawsuits list shows the hearing date when it's published.
- Appeal window. Objectors have about 30 days to appeal. No appeal means the settlement becomes final.
- Claims review and payment. The administrator checks every claim, removes duplicates and fraud, works out each share and pays. This often takes 2 to 6 months.
What delays payments
- Appeals. A single objector's appeal can hold up payment for a year or longer, because nobody is paid until it's resolved.
- Large or pro-rata funds. When each person gets a share of the fund, the administrator has to finish reviewing every claim before amounts can be set.
- Fraudulent claims. Some settlements get millions of fake claims, and screening them takes time.
- Second distributions. Money left from uncashed checks is sometimes paid out again months later in a smaller residual payment.
How to check your claim status
Go to the official settlement website and look for "Check claim status" or the administrator's contact page. You'll usually need the claim ID or confirmation number you got when you filed, so keep that email. If you track your claims in Claim, the confirmation number is saved with each filed claim.
How you get paid
Most administrators now pay electronically. You pick the method on the claim form: PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, an ACH bank transfer, a prepaid digital card or a paper check. Digital payments usually arrive faster and don't expire as quickly as checks, which are often void after 90 to 180 days.
FAQ
How long after the final approval hearing do I get paid?
Usually 1 to 6 months if nobody appeals. With an appeal, payments wait until it's resolved, which can take a year or more.
Why haven't I received my class action payment?
The most common reasons are a pending appeal, ongoing claims review, or a missing payment method. Check the official settlement website or contact the administrator with your claim ID.
Can I change how I get paid after filing?
Often, yes. Many administrators let you update your payment method or address through the claim status page before payments go out.
