How much do class action settlements actually pay?

What class action settlements really pay per person, why payouts vary so much, real examples from recent settlements, and the open settlements with the highest published payouts.

Updated October 20, 20266 min readBy the Claim team
Quick answerMost consumer class action settlements pay between $10 and $100 per person. Settlements for data breaches, cars and financial harm can pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to people with documented losses. The final amount depends on the size of the fund and how many people file.

Why payouts vary so much

  • Fixed vs. pro-rata. Some settlements pay a set amount, like $28 per claim. Others split a fund between everyone who files, so the amount isn't known until claims close.
  • How many people file. In a pro-rata settlement, fewer claims means a bigger share for each person.
  • Proof. A no proof claim often pays a small flat amount. Receipts or documented losses unlock higher tiers.
  • Fees. Attorneys' fees and administration costs come out of the fund before class members are paid.

Real examples

  • Instagram's Illinois biometric privacy settlement ($68.5 million) paid about $32.56 per valid claim in 2024.
  • Robinhood's trade execution settlement ($2 million) estimated an average of $17.60 per class member.
  • Bumble's Boost auto-renewal settlement ($22.5 million) estimated $21 to $44 nationwide and $43 to $85 for California subscribers.

These are from settlements that have closed. Our open class action lawsuits list shows the published payout for every settlement you can still file.

How to get more from a settlement

  • Upload proof when it's optional. It usually raises your payment.
  • Claim every product or account you're allowed to, up to the limit.
  • Choose a digital payment method so your payment doesn't expire in the mail.

FAQ

What is the average class action settlement payout?

For consumer settlements, most people get $10 to $100. Cases with documented losses, like data breaches or car defects, can pay much more.

Why did I get less than the estimate?

In pro-rata settlements, the estimate assumes a number of claims. If more people file than expected, each share is smaller.

Are class action settlement payments taxable?

It depends on what the money replaces. Refunds of what you paid are generally not income. See our guide on taxes for details.
