Quick answerAmazon agreed to a $2.5 billion settlement with the FTC over Prime sign-ups and cancellations: $1.5 billion for customer refunds and a $1 billion civil penalty. The claim window for people who weren't paid automatically closed on July 27, 2026. A separate Amazon returns refund settlement is open for claims until December 1, 2026.

The $2.5 billion Amazon Prime settlement

In September 2025, Amazon settled the Federal Trade Commission's case alleging it enrolled customers in Prime without clear consent and made cancelling hard. Here's what the FTC says about the refunds:

  • Who's eligible: US customers who signed up for Prime, or tried to cancel, between June 23, 2019 and June 23, 2025 through certain enrollment flows, and who used few Prime benefits.
  • How much: a refund of Prime fees, capped at $200 per person. Earlier payments were capped at $51.
  • How it's paid: by check, PayPal or Venmo. Payments are going out through April 2027.
  • Cash it quickly: the FTC says each payment expires 60 days after it's issued.
  • Claims: people who weren't paid automatically could file a claim until July 27, 2026. That window is now closed.

Details are on the FTC's Amazon refunds page and the official settlement site, SubscriptionMembershipSettlement.com.
