How to check if you're part of a class action

How to find out whether you're a class member in a class action settlement: read the class definition, search your email for notices, and check open settlements by company.

Quick answerYou're part of a class action settlement if you fit its class definition: you bought the product, used the service or had the account it covers, during the dates it covers, and sometimes in certain states. The definition is on the official settlement website. If you fit, you can file a claim.

Read the class definition

Every settlement has a paragraph that starts "All persons who…". It names three things:

  • What: the product, service, account or event, such as a data breach.
  • When: the class period, for example January 2018 to June 2024.
  • Where: the United States, or only certain states.

Our settlement pages put this in a "Who qualifies" list, using the official wording. Start with the list of open class action lawsuits and search for a company you've used.

Look for a notice

When a settlement knows who its class members are, it sends a notice by email or mail. Search your inbox and spam for the company's name plus "settlement", "class action" or "notice". The notice usually includes a Claim ID or PIN that you'll need on the form. No notice doesn't mean you don't qualify. Many consumer settlements can't identify buyers and rely on people filing on their own.

Check by company

The quickest way is to check the companies in your life: your bank, your phone carrier, the apps you use, the car you drive, the stores you shop at. Claim asks about the big ones in a few taps and shows every open settlement that matches, with the deadline and whether you need proof.

If you're not sure

Contact the settlement administrator through the official site. They can tell you whether your name, email or account is on the class list. Don't file a claim you know isn't true: claim forms are signed under penalty of perjury.

FAQ

Am I automatically part of a class action?

If you fit the class definition, yes, you're a class member automatically. But to get money from a settlement you usually have to file a claim, unless the settlement pays class members automatically.

How do I find class action settlements I'm eligible for?

Check open settlements by company, look for notices in your email and mail, and read each class definition. Claim matches you with open settlements from a few quick questions.

What if I didn't get a notice?

You may still qualify. Many settlements can't identify every buyer, so they rely on people filing on their own.
